Embracing Inner Kindness: Revealing the Power of Self-Compassion

Inner kindness matters because life is fucking hard enough.

We live in a time where corporations are people, and profits are everything. When it’s every man for himself, acts of kindness are revolutionary. I’m confident that many of us are kind to others every day of our lives — it’s in our nature. As much as being kind to others is in our hearts, someone often gets forgotten: ourselves.

When someone we know makes a mistake, we often offer them grace. It was an accident, or their intentions were good. When a team member did something I’m usually responsible for (to take some of the burden from me), he did it entirely wrong — resulting in lost sales and unhappy customers.

I dealt with the situation with grace. I didn’t criticize him or make him feel stupid. We reviewed the process, how he did it, and how I would have done it. It was a great learning experience for him, and he’s less likely to do the thing completely wrong again.

If we can offer grace to someone else, why don’t we do this for ourselves? If the roles were reversed, I absolutely would have beaten myself up for days because “I should know better” or “I’ve been doing this long enough to not make such a mistake!”

Mistakes happen! That’s part of life! Be kind to yourself. Be gentle. In this world driven by profits and perfection, self-kindness is a revolution.
